If you or a loved one was involved in an auto accident, working with a Detroit collision shop is one of the best decisions you can make. Therefore please take a moment to read through these steps.
1. Check surrounding, move to safe area.
After you’ve been hit by another driver, the first thing you want to do is look around. Check to see where you are, are you in the middle of the highway or off on the shoulder? This is important because before you get out of you car or unbuckle your seat belt you must make sure you are in a safe area to do that so you are not hit by another car. Drive to a safe place if you can. If you aren’t seriously injured move your car out of the way of traffic. If your car can’t move, turn on the hazard lights.
2. Turn off vehicle and get out
Put the car into park, use parking brake if you have one. Turn off the engine. Walk to somewhere safe and at least 15 feet away from the road.
3. Check if other cars were involved
If your accident involved another vehicle check on them and help them follow the steps above. Get their insurance information, phone number, license plate, etc.
4. Call the police
Call the police to your location. When speaking to police tell them an unbiased and true story about what happened in the accident. If the police can’t make it to the seen you can make a report with the DMV.
5. Take Pictures
Take pictures of the location, the other driver, both cars and anything else you believe will be useful. A Detroit collision shop like Matrix auto can potentially give you a estimate using the photos you took of your vehicle. We can walk you through how to get a free estimate as well.
6. File insurance claim
Call your insurance companies claim hotline on the back of the card. Go through the steps and get paid for the repairs.
7. Take it to the shop of your choosing
Your insurance company may sway you to go to one of their DRP (direct repair program) shops. They claim that if you do that they will warranty the repair, and if you go anywhere else it won’t be covered. This is not true and is actually illegal for insurance companies to do under the Right To Repair act. The truth is the shop warranties the repair, and as long as you are going to a good shop, like Matrix Auto Collision all repairs get a lifetime warranty.
